CHENNAI: A film production company has approached the Madras high court seeking to stop the release of Kamal Haasan's big budget film 'Vishwaroopam', saying the actor had taken 4 crore to direct and act in a film titled 'Marmayogi' in 2008 but failed to keep his word.

Justice K Venkataraman, before whom the suit filed by Regent Saimira Entertainment Ltd came up for admission on Thursday, ordered notices to the actor and other partners of Rajkamal Films International, seeking replies by January 3, 2013. Vishwaroopam, a trilingual film made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu, is set to be released through the Direct To Home platform on January 11, three days ahead of its scheduled screening in theatres. 

Regent Saimira said it had entered into an agreement with Kamal in 2008 for 'Marmayogi' which was to feature, besides Kamal, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu. The film was to be produced in 18 months at 100 crore, the suit said. More than 6.5 crore was paid, and Kamal's salary for acting in and directing the film was 4 crore, it said. Shooting did not commence for months, though it was to start after Kamal's earlier film 'Dasavatharam', it said, adding that Kamal directed and acted in another film 'Unnaipol Oruvan' in the meanwhile in violation of the agreement.

He also failed to abide by the industry practice of returning the salary if the artist does not act in the film, it said. 'Unnaipol Oruvan' was released only after the actor deposited half the claim amount in the form of security, it said, adding the original civil suit is still pending in court. The production house said Kamal directed and acted in 'Vishwaroopam' violating the agreement conditions.
